Oxfam’s Second Hand September

Every week, 13 million items of clothing ends up in UK landfill. This is completely unsustainable and is putting increasing pressure on our planet and its people.

To try and combat this, Oxfam have started an amazing initiative called Second Hand September asking people to pledge to buy only second hand for 30 days or more - giving not only our clothes but our planet a longer life. With the start of this year throwing us all into the complete unknown, one of the few positives to come out is the opportunity to break old habits and work together to build a fairer and more sustainable future.

With Charity shops overflowing with post lockdown donations, and Instagram, eBay, Depop and Etsy heaving with vintage and preloved gems, there couldn’t be a better time to buying second hand. This doesn’t only mean shopping, it can be swapping and borrowing items from friends, or perhaps taking the opportunity to show the clothes already sat in your wardrobe a little more love.

This year’s #SecondhandSeptember campaign is fronted by the beautiful Michaela Coel; a BAFTA award-winning actor, director, screenwriter, producer, playwright and poet who was inspired to get involved with Oxfam’s #SecondhandSeptember campaign after learning that 336,000 tons of clothing end up in UK landfill every year. Choosing to shop second hand is one way that we can all play a part in shifting to more sustainable consumption.

To assist with the #SecondhandSeptember campaign we have pulled together a list of some of our favourite second hand clothing sites. We hope you find them useful, and if you know of any other secondhand sites/apps please suggest them in the comments.
