Who am I?

Hi, I’m Alice! I’m a Second Year Fashion Design student at Falmouth University. I was born In Weston-Super-Mare so Falmouth is exactly like home for me – right next to the sea! I originally became interested in sustainability in March last year when more statistics and scandals began coming out from fast fashion brands and when I learnt about how polluting the fashion and textiles industry is. I wanted to do my bit to help change this and look good too so I started a small business in July 2020 using up all my remnant fabrics and off-cuts from my university collection!

What I believe in

I feel that to make a change within the fashion and textiles industry it’s important for each brand to be transparent about how their clothes are made, how much their workers are paid, where their fabrics are sourced, and so much more! I believe that the fashion industry (especially fast fashion brands) will have to change their current ways to become more sustainable by using non-water polluting dyes, recycled fabrics, and by not mass-producing garments.

Why SFW?

I wanted to be part of an organization of like-minded people who wanted to make a change throughout the fashion industry and SFW does just that! I came across an advert to join SFW and jumped at the chance! The team are really passionate about holding events and talks to provide others with more sustainable clothing options (and they’re all super friendly too which is an added bonus!)

What I do for SFW

My role within SFW is a Community Inclusion Volunteer. When planning events my job is to make sure that they’re as accessible as possible to as many people within that community. This might mean making sure that we record the event or hold the same event a couple of times to fit around those with work or child commitments.

3 Favourite items in my wardrobe

  • Green Velvet Coat – Found this in a charity shop in Truro, Cornwall brand new with tags for £5! It’s so warm and I’ve worn it almost every day since purchasing it.

  • Brown Cable Knit Jumper – I adore this jumper!! Spotted it in a different charity shop in Truro with a “repair me” label – the back neck had come away from the collar – after purchasing it I re-joined the seam and now it’s as good as new!

  • Check Jumpsuit – Bought this second-hand in an eBay bid, it’s an absolutely gorgeous statement piece and is so versatile that I could wear it throughout the day and at night for drinks with the girls (when we’re allowed!). I’m even planning on using it to make a pattern for another one for myself!
