Introducing SFW Hub: Frome

Introducing our Hub partner in Frome, Everyone Needs Pockets!

Everyone Needs Pockets is an inclusive network of people and enterprises based in and around

Frome, Somerset, whose focus lies in addressing clothing and textile reuse and sustainability

through repurposing, repair, and recycling. The group is comprised of makers and researchers,

who explore local and global textile sustainability issues.

By creating physical and online spaces in and around Frome for people to practice swapping, upcycling, repairing and sharing their preloved clothing, the activities led by Everyone Needs Pockets enables participants to share and learn skills whilst connecting with one another whilst also providing a place to find joy in crafting their own wardrobe and finding new routes for self-expression with the additional benefits that can be generated for mental health and wellbeing.

Through workshops, talks and events on sustainable fashion, the team raises awareness about the huge impact that fast fashion has on the planet whilst offering people the opportunity to learn new skills to make a difference.

Some key topics of focus include:

● Textile reuse and repair

● Carbon emission reduction

● Raising awareness of the harm of the clothing and textile industry and textile waste

● Mental health and wellbeing by making and repurposing textiles

● Gathering as a social and sharing network

● Creating connections and solutions

● Supporting individual and group ideas and projects

Recent projects include: the Big Silk Mill Quilt community quilting project using textile waste; Sewing the Seeds collaborative community project involving sewing, harvesting, processing and weaving cloth from linen and nettle plants; the regular How To Mend Your Clothes workshops; and, the Materials Library. Everyone Needs Pockets is supported by Edventure Future Shed Frome, a Green and Healthy Frome initiative funded by the National Lottery’s Climate Action Fund.

Everyone Needs Pockets says:

“We are a network of people who have come together with all our skills and passion to make a change to the unsustainable way we consume and dispose of our textiles. We want to create our own circular economy for clothing and textiles in Frome, keeping as much out of landfill as possible. We want to get textiles back into the Curriculum, create community and boost people’s wellbeing in the process.”
