Introducing SFW Hub: Newtown

Introducing our Hub in Newtown, hosted by Textile Junkies.

Textile Junkies is a non-profit community-based business focused on promoting circular textiles,,

created by Cheryl Griffiths of The Dressmaker’s Daughter as a result of her concern about the

impact fast fashion is having on the environment.

From the studio in Newtown, Powys, the Textile Junkies team offer a range of classes to live

more sustainably through re-fashioning, upcycling, making and repairing all whilst exploring

creativity.

Their key aims and objectives are:

● To promote a circular economy by teaching repair and upcycling skills

● To promote the re-use and recycling of fabrics and clothing to reduce the impact of fast fashion on landfill

● To move towards a zero Carbon and zero waste lifestyle

● To provide an inclusive, supportive and creative social space

● To provide an inspiring and educational environment for young people to explore their creativity

● To promote the benefits of textile art and crafts for mindfulness and mental wellbeing

The Dressmaker’s Daughter

Cheryl’s dressmaking lineage, started with her grandmother, back in 1925, making her a third generation dressmaker. Cheryl herself, graduated from Brighton University with a BA Hons in Fine Art and began her own dressmaking journey with her mother in 1998. Cheryl is no stranger to community projects. In 2013, she served as a town councillor and is one of the founders of the Newtown Food Festival CIC. She has been involved in many community arts projects and is an active member of Newtown Business Community. In addition to the dressmaking, alterations and repair services, The Dressmaker’s Daughter retails preloved and vintage clothing.

Cheryl says:

“I have become increasingly concerned about over-consumption and the amount of goods finding their way to landfill. The fashion industry in particular has a HUGE part to play. I hope to encourage people to re-evaluate their life choices and reintroduce them to forgotten skills that express their (anti-fast fashion) individuality through creativity.”
