SFW HUB: HASTINGS

28 - 29 SEPTEMBER 2024

THE DEPO, 2A ELPHINSTONE ROAD, HASTINGS, TN34 2EE

Hosted by MAKU

OUR PARTNER IN HASTINGS

Based in Hastings, MAKU UK make useful, beautiful things from leather industry discards. Their handmade sheepskin slippers, rugs and more are created using offcuts, seconds and surplus stock. All MAKU slippers are made in limited edition batches using the finite amount of leather and sheepskin they find in any particular finish.

Director Suzan Aral explains: “MAKU UK is a business based on making use of leather industry discards, so we feel it’s vital to talk about how fashion can be sustainable and the positive change we can all make through our own clothing choices. By bringing people together via mending and making events and our panel discussion on 'Sustainability Tribes', we hope to inspire more sustainable ways of sourcing and maintaining our wardrobes.”

“Our aim from the start has been to 'make use not waste' and encourage others to do the same. We designed our workspace in Hastings, aka the DEPO, so it can also be used by others interested in wasting less. To date we have hosted many events including pop-up sales, sewing groups and art classes – all with sustainability at their core – so becoming a Sustainable Fashion Week Hub seemed the obvious next step for us.”
