Getting to know the Maker: Hulahan

Next in our ‘Meet the Maker’ series where we deep dive into the crafts of our Affiliates, we chat to Hannah of Hulahan about her five favourite pieces which she crafts from army wear and found textiles to create one-of-a-kind, made-to-order, zero-waste designs. Hannah is committed to sustainability whilst embracing the power of style and fashion. Hannah describes her design process and inspiration:

“I take care to consider the person wearing our clothing and the demands of their lifestyle. Designing with proportion and the ability to adapt pieces for various functions is essential; being able to style items in multiple ways is more sustainable than purchasing more clothing. I also create zero and low waste bias cut dresses/skirts [that are] made to order and proportion. These pieces are designed to be worn in a multitude of ways to work across seasons and needs. My influences include vintage Yves Saint Laurent, Madeleine Vionnet, and the crossover of men’s wear into women’s wear.”

Let’s take a look at her five favourite pieces to create.

Hulahan Jumpsuits

The jumpsuit is a strong contender for ultimate statement look. Here, Hannah showcases her incredible talent for upcycling and reworking found materials into modern pieces which are timeless.

“A mixture of land girl style and YSL influence. The jumpsuits are made to order, with choices of finish – classic or ruffle collar, obi wrap belt or belt made using vintage belt buckle. The legs are made such that they can be worn tapered or wide. This is reworked from sourced army overalls.”

Yves Saint Laurent Dress

Evolving the style and chic-ness of the blouse pattern, Hannah created a sustainable dress in a timeless cut.

“Made initially from French 19th century vintage linen sheets, the blouse and then the dress was taken from a Yves Saint Laurent blouse from 1974. Adapted and made to order to fit exact proportions. I aim to use found textiles and responsibly sourced, natural textiles.”

Laurent Blouse

Versatile, comfortable and stylish, the Laurent blouse is inspired by Yves Saint Laurent.

“Designed so they can be created from army overalls, the Laurent blouse can be worn as a blouse or jacket and styled across seasons. Vintage inspired, from YSL of course, the Laurent blouse is made with three different proportions and heights in mind.”

Multi-Verse Dress

Cut on the bias, the Multi-Verse Dress was born out of Hannah’s incredible zero waste design skills. Made to order and available across 3 lengths and a range of colours, the Multi-Verse Dress is the ultimate customisable piece.

“Developed and designed to be zero waste and worn in a multitude of ways. Inspired by Madeline Vionnet – the undisputed queen of bias cutting. I wanted to create a piece that spiralled around the body and could be shaped to how the wearer felt – a good piece if you like your fashion to be adaptable.”

Available in jet black, scarlet red or chocolate crepe - order here.
